EU-Russia - Taking the Partnership for Modernisation forward

The EU and Russia have a vast potential for jointly creating economic growth and increasing the living standards of our citizens. It is our common aim to exploit our untapped potential of cooperation. To achieve this, the EU-Russia Partnership for Modernisation has focused on creating new opportunities and resolving blockages. Business, civil society, and international financial institutions are partners in this joint undertaking.

In this spirit, EU and Russian officials and stakeholders have gathered in Moscow on 12 October 2012, exploring opportunities for further cooperation. Today’s conference, hosted by the Russian Minister of Economic Development, will be a chance to:

- discuss investment projects stimulating modernisation;

- explore opportunities to improve, align and harmonise the regulatory framework for business;

- create joint projects in the area of rule of law and to cooperate in the fight against corruption;

- explore ways to support small and medium-sized enterprises, foster educational and training programs.

The Russian Minister of Economic Development Andrei Belousov stressed that “The Conference will provide the impetus to EU – Russia modernisation cooperation by giving it a more project-oriented approach, improving cross-dialogues communication and finding points of common interest. Our strategic perspective is the creation of a harmonious economic space from Lisbon to Vladivostok.

The Conference findings will be reported by the EU and Russia coordinators to the forthcoming Summit.”

“We will actively involve business in our work, strengthen bilateral modernisation tracks, enhance the expert support of all activities”, added the Director of the MED Europe Department Ms. Danilova.

The EU coordinator for the Partnership, Director of the European External Action Service Gunnar Wiegand said: “The EU will remain a strong and attractive market for Russia, and vice versa. We are ready to cooperate pragmatically and invite Russia to create with us a win-win situation for our citizens and companies.

The EU, working on the basis of its commitment to democracy and free market economy, will continue to develop this common undertaking together with Russia. ”
